First minted in 1921, on the occasion of the commemoration of the centenary of the independence of Mexico from the Spanish domain. The war of independence began on 16 September 1810, at the hands of Miguel Hidalgo, who gave the so-called “cry of Dolores”, and ends on September 27, 1821, with the entrance to the city of Mexico of the ejercito Trigarante or “the army of the three guarantees”, led by Agust\u00edn de Iturbide. This ended the colonial period in Mexico.<\/p>\n

To celebrate, a monument was erected. This is known today as “El \u00c1ngel de la Independencia”, (one of the greatest Mexican symbols), located at the roundabout of the Paseo de la Reforma. Inaugurated in 1910 by the President of the Porfirio D\u00edaz era, culminating with this event the celebrations of the Centenary of Independence.<\/p>\n

The project was conducted by the architect Antonio Rivas Mercado, the engineer Roberto Gayol and the Italian sculptor Enrique Alciati.<\/p>\n

The column, is inspired by the ancient Roman columns, dedicated to extol the bravery of a character, at its top rests the sculpture of the winged victory, also known as the victory of Samothrace one more famous Greek sculptures of the Hellenistic period. It was cast from bronze with gold coating, measuring 6.7 meters high and weighing 7 tons. With the right arm extended and holding a laurel wreath, this symbolizes the victory of the heroes. On the left, extended backwards holding a few broken chain links representing the end of three centuries of slavery at the hands of the Spanish domain.<\/p>\n
